Kotor is a fortified town on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, in a bay near the limestone cliffs of Mt. Lovćen. Characterized by winding streets and squares, its medieval old town has several Romanesque churches,

I like to wander the old town whenever the road takes us to Kotor.  I love stone-paved streets wide enough to allow only walkers to pass. The shade in the narrow cobbled alleys provides oasis-like refuge on hot summer days.

Legend has it that the city of Kotor was supposed to be built on a stone hill above the city, on the site of a cave.  When Grand Prince Stefan Nemanja started digging the cave, a fairy appeared and advised him that it was not a good place to live and that the city should be built in the bay.

The Grand Prince, of course, obeyed and built Kotor.  When the construction was finished, he invited people and the fairy and bragged about how he had built a beautiful city.  The fairy got angry and told him that he had achieved it with her help and that he would not have been able to do it without her.  The Grand Prince slapped the fairy, which provoked her anger, so she poisoned all the springs around Kotor, and all the guests who drank from them lost their minds. 

The Grand Prince soon asked for forgiveness, and the fairy removed the spell of madness from the people, but she cleared only one spring behind the southern city gates.  The myth says that from then until today, all the waters in Kotor are salty, especially in summer, except for one source.
