Back in mid 15th century the Kingdom of Hungary was the main opponent of the Ottomans.  Belgrade, then capital of the Serbian despot Djuradj Branković, was the most important Hungarian stronghold on the southern border, . After the fall of Constantinople, Sultan Mehmed the Second launched a large army with the aim of conquering Belgrade and Smederevo.

In the summer of 1456, the Turkish army advanced and approached Belgrade from the Danube, bringing terror among the inhabitants.  Fighting took place both on the ramparts and in the streets.  the Christians were driven into the city, but the Turks did not have the strength to conquer it.

After a fierce assault on the city, the Christian army led by Sibinjanin Janko (John Hunyadi) unexpectedly managed to repel the attack on July 22. Belgrade was defended. The defeated sultan withdrew his army and many dead remained on the battlefield. Among the human bodies, according to the legend, lay a sparrow hit by three arrows.

The sparrow, which may have saved three lives, thus became a symbol of Belgrade.

The picture shows the center of Belgrade from a sparrow's perspective. In the distance towards the horizon, you can see the river Sava and the mouth of the Danube.

The painting comes in a limited series of only 50 prints.  Each print is hand-signed numbered and it includes a certificate of authenticity.
