Kamenari is a small place in the Boka Kotorska bay and is set 15 kilometer east of Herceg Novi. The place is named after masters working with stone (kamen = stone).
Every year we pass through Kamenari on our way from Tivat to Herceg-Novi. We usually get up early and rush to the airport to catch one of first morning flights from Beograd to Tivat.
After landing we rent a car at Tivat airport. I put our oversized luggage in the trunk of a small car where there’s barely room left for us and then I drive. For those who do not want to visit Kotor and Risan bay on the way to Herceg Novi the ferry runs from Kamenari to Lepetane, place on the opposite bank of the bay. This is exactly the road we take. We rush to reach Herceg-Novi and board the ferry in Kamenari.
Rush to the airport, passing security checks and passport controls, and one-hour flight on a loud ATR72 plane leave no time to think. The ferry ride is first chance I get to catch a break from the hectic morning. It's usually close to noon when we reach the ferry terminal, and the summer sun leaves the impression that our wait takes longer.
When the ferry starts moving, we get out of the car to feel sea breeze on our faces. Only then, we can clearly see the village from the boat and that is the moment when astounding beauty wakes us up from our mundane dreams. Every year we get stunned by beauty of Kamenari but only when chance to explore the village is lost. It’s like realizing you missed opportunity of something great because you were busy doing dull things.
